General Tips & FAQ's

You need to block quote the citation, regardless of how many people are speaking.

STEPS TO BLOCK QUOTE:
  1. Introduce the quotation in YOUR paragraph.
  2. Copy the quotation EXACTLY as you see it in the book.
  3. INDENT the quotation an EXTRA "TAB" from the left margin.
  4. RIGHT after the quotation, include the information about where the quotation occurred in the text. Here's the formula for that:

Open parentheses + author's name + Act # in Roman Numerals + period + Scene # + period + line number(s) + Close parentheses

Example: (Shakespeare II.3.2-4) = Shakespeare's play, Act 2, Scene 3, lines 2-4

5. Place a period after the close parentheses.

6. AFTER the quotation, continue your paragraph, analyzing the quotation; the paragraph should continue at the left margin (no indentation!)

SEE BELOW FOR SOME EXAMPLES:

Because their families were fighting, Romeo and Juliet were only able to see each other at night. In one of their secret meetings, Romeo is afraid that he hears a noise.  Juliet does not want him to leave, and tries to reassure him, saying:

Wilt thou be gone? It is not yet near day:

It was the nightingale, and not the lark,

That pierced the fearful hollow of thine ear;

Nightly she sings on yon pomegranate-tree:

Believe me, love, it was the nightingale.  (Shakespeare III.5.1-5)

Juliet tries to convince Romeo that he only heard night birds, and not the birds who sing during the morning.  Juliet does not want Romeo to go, and she uses her knowledge of nature to keep him with her for a longer period of time.

When Macbeth heard that Banquo’s children would inherit the throne, Macbeth was not pleased. Macbeth did not want Banquo’s sons having the throne because he wanted his kingship to be passed down to his own sons. So, Macbeth makes a plan to kill Banquo with some hired assassins:

Murderers: We are resolved, my lord.

Macbeth: I’ll call upon you straight. Abide within.

It is concluded. Banquo, thy soul’s flight,

If it find heaven, must find it out tonight (Shakespeare III.2.159-162).

Thus, Macbeth goes through the extreme measure of killing Banquo, by ordering the assassins to ensure that Banquo is killed that same night.
